Introduction to Barcelona - Airport
The Spanish city of Barcelona is a favourite with northern European visitors for its history, heritage and superb setting on the Mediterranean coast, north of many well-known resorts. The city’s airport, set 12kms from the city centre, is the main point of arrival for many low-cost fights from all over northern Europe, especially in the summer holiday season. Routes also run to several US cities, Latin America and a few Asian destinations. Its over 30 million annual passengers make Barcelona Airport the 10th busiest in Europe. Low-cost traffic here has grown exponentially over the last 10 years or so with the popularity of low-cost carriers, which now make up most of the airlines serving the facility. The two terminals host the usual traveller conveniences, with Terminal 2 given over entirely to low-cost flights and often crowded during the summer season. Its main advantage is its dedicated rail station giving fast access to the city centre, leaving Terminal 1 passengers to fight for taxis and buses.
