Introduction to Badajoz - Merida
Badajoz is just a short distance from the great city of Merida, which is home to possibly the finest examples the Roman Empire in Spain. The archeology of the region is renowned with temples, amphitheatres and the most famous landmark of them all, the long bridge of Puente Romano. The smaller but equally historic Badajoz is just 50 minutes away on the E-90. In the town there is an impressive history, with the Moors having had the greatest influence. Most of the buildings were built as fortresses, and this includes the cathedral. The Alcazaba (Arab fortress) here is well worth seeing, as are the great views from the paths of the La Giralda gardens where the Fine Arts Museum resides. Hotels in Badajoz are gathered either side of the River Guadiana, where the granite bridge built in 1460 spans the central waterway. While Merida has great Roman features, Badajoz has fine landmarks of historical significance from another era.other spellings: marida otel, merrida hote, mereda hotles, meridar hotle, mereda hotes
