Introduction to Asturias - Cangas de Onis
Asturias is a principality bordering on the Bay of Biscay in northern Spain and is home to the cities of Oviedo, Gijon and Aviles. The history of the region dates back to its occupation by Homo erectus, one of man’s earliest ancestors. Subsequent inhabitation by the Neanderthals and then by modern humans has resulting in Asturias being rich in archaeological attractions, such as cave paintings and rudimentary tool work. To the north of this principality lies the Cantabrian Sea, whose coastal border features countless beaches, sea caves and secluded coves for visitors to explore. To the south, the limestone Cantabrian Mountain range with its spectacular megaliths of 2,500 metres offer visitors endless opportunities for hiking, breath-taking views and scenic drives. In terms of accommodation, some of the best valued Asturias hotels are to be found in Cangas de Onis, which is located to the southeast of the large seaport of Gijon.
