South Korea Travel Guide - Essentials

Safety: there are a few gangs that operate petty crimes in the major cities in South Korea and they usually target tourists. However, if you are sensible and aware of what is happening around you there is little to worry about. Pick pocketing and bag snatching are the two of the most common petty crimes in the busy tourist areas.
When to go: when you visit South Korea should depend on what you want out of a holiday as every season offers stunning scenery and fun-filled activities. In the winter months, you can experience excellent skiing facilities while in summer, sunbathing on beautiful tranquil beaches and swimming in the crystal clear waters are the most popular activities. Autumn and spring offer a moderate temperature which allows visitors to still enjoy the outdoors without having to wrap in their winter woollies.
Language: one of South Korea’s official languages is Hangungmal, a dialect of Korean. (Chosono is spoken in North Korea). The other official language is Mandarin. The Korean language has borrowed many words from Mandarin and a speaker of one language should be able to understand the other at a basic level. English is not widely spoken in the country, but some people may know enough to understand your basic requests. It is advisable to carry a phrasebook with you throughout your holiday.
Emergency: the response time for emergency situations in major cities is on par with Western cities. However, the rural areas do not always have an emergency service.
