Weather

Weather in Johannesburg
During the winter, temperatures occasionally drop below the freezing point at night, but rise to a relatively pleasant level during the day. The coldest temperatures of the year occur in July and August, when the range is from 4°C and 19°C. Snowfall is unusual, but frosts occur at higher area elevations. Overall, winters are mild, particularly when compared to those in Europe.
During the summer (October to March), there are frequent rain storms, although the temperatures stay quite warm, averaging around 20°C. Rainfall comes down hard and fast, often accompanied by thunder and lightening – and sometimes hailstones as well. The sun and clear blue skies generally emerge quickly after a heavy rain shower. January is the hottest month, but the temperatures can fluctuate significantly during this time – from 12°C to 34°C.
