By air: Johannesburg International Airport is situated about 13 miles east of the city, and handles all international and domestic flights coming into the area. The airport is very large and busy: there are six terminals in all, handling traffic from all over the world.
From the airport, the city is accessible by bus and taxi – but you’re advised that taxi fare can fluctuate significantly, so it’s always a good idea to agree on a fare before heading off to your destination.
By bus: there are a number of operators providing bus service to Jo'burg – from the standard public and private lines to one specialising in backpacker travel. With the exception of city-to-city bus services, which operate from Park station in Jo’burg, most others tend to originate from the Pretoria bus station.
By train: all rail service to Johannesburg terminates at the city’s central train station. The station itself is quite safe, although it’s not advised to wander around the streets adjacent to the station. Daily train service arrives from Cape Town and Durban; and frequent Metrorail service arrives from such locations as Soweto, Pretoria, Vereeniging, Randfontein, Carltonville and Oberholzer – among others. Travelling on trains is reasonably comfortable and four classes of service are offered.
