There are 108 public bus routes in the greater metropolitan area, meaning that coverage is quite comprehensive. The buses operate between 06:00 and 19:00; and taxis can be readily found round the clock.
Bus: the bus services in metropolitan Jo’burg provide relatively cheap transportation until 19:00, at which time all services cease. Although you’ll find that buses typically take longer to reach a destination than minibus taxis, they are a safer means of getting around.
Taxi: the minibus taxis, or ‘zola budd,’ provide the quickest service from point-to-point in the city – making pickups anywhere they find passengers, and then heading off when they are full. All main routes are serviced from 05:00-21:00. There are main ranks or stations of minibuses located at Kazerne (corner of Pim and Sauer streets); and at the Newtown public car park.
You are advised that taxi ranks tend to be frequented by petty thieves, and that if you are travelling with baggage it’s best to use a metered taxi service rather than a minibus. Safety is a concern on public transport in the city and travellers are encouraged to be vigilant at all times. Metered taxis are also found at taxi ranks and can be booked in advance by telephone.
