Gauteng: 1 hour, 30 minutes by car heading northwest from Johannesburg and you’ll be in the midst of the beauty of the Magaliesberg mountains and their impressive rock formations, as well as numerous streams and waterfalls and vegetation unique to the area. Nearby you can also visit bird sanctuaries, botanical gardens and nature reserves – and also several archaeological and paleontological sites.
Pretoria: is known throughout South Africa as the ‘Jacaranda city’ owing to the beautiful purple-blossomed trees that line its quiet streets. Pretoria is a lovely city, and one that has a fascinating history. On your visit you can tour a number of historical municipal buildings and well-rated museums.
Sun City: for a bit more frivolous entertainment, you might want to make the short trip to Sun City, which is a playground for the family – and particularly the adults. There are casinos, golf courses, fun parks, cabaret shows and many restaurants to choose from.
If you’re travelling in this direction and are interested in archaeological sites, the area known as the Cradle of Humankind is located just to the west. The grouping of caves here is believed to have been home to our hominid ancestors.
They also include a visit to a cultural village, where you can see tribal men and women engaged in making traditional crafts. The drive from Jo’burg is a short one and you’ll find a good selection of operators offering tours.
