The historic township of Soweto; Gold Reef City, with its amusement park and casino; the Apartheid Museum; and the Johannesburg Art Gallery are interesting places to visit. Other scenic attractions are found in the area immediately outside the city, such as the Melrose Bird Sanctuary; the Melville Koppies Nature Reserve; The Wilds Botanic Gardens; and the Zoological Gardens and Zoo Lake.
Gold Reef City: is an entertainment park and casino built around a 19th century gold mine. You find most of the amusements, adventure rides and other diversions that are featured at top theme parks – and certainly plenty to keep the family well-occupied for the day.
Rosebank Rooftop Market: is touted by many local residents as the best flea market in the city – and is very popular with tourists. Souvenirs are plentiful, as are items that are unique to Africa: more than 500 stalls sell antiques, ceramics, clothing, jewellery – and excellent arts and crafts items.
This market, as well as Jo’burg’s other flea markets, are filled with good bargains and often with some surprising finds. If you’re looking for something special – and African – to take back home with you, Rosebank is a good place to start looking.
Newtown Cultural Precinct: not long ago, this area of the city was mostly derelict, but it has had the benefit of a massive facelift resulting in its being one of Jo’burg’s most pleasant places to visit today. There are a variety of diverse attractions here including Cafe Horror, the Electric Workshop, the Market Theatre, Museum Africa, Oriental Plaza and the South African Breweries World of Beer. Excellent dining and shopping options are the norm.
Soweto: has been transformed into a place that attracts tourists eager to learn about its turbulent past and also to experience the culture and cuisine of today. Places of interest here include the Nelson Mandela Museum, Archbishop Tutu's House, the Hector Pieterson Museum and Regina Mundi Catholic Church. The Constitutional Court is worth visiting also: it was opened in 2004 in the former prison known as the Fort.
