Johannesburg Travel Guide - Activities
Football: South Africans are great lovers of football and enjoy watching the city’s Kaizer Chiefs and Amakhozi battle for top position in the Professional Soccer League. Jo’burg is also represented in this league by other teams: the Orlando Pirates and also the Birds. You might want to take in one of the matches during your visit, at either the Rand or FNB stadiums.
Running: races are sponsored every Sunday by several of the city’s athletic clubs. Thousands of road-runners gather in the morning to participate in races held by such clubs as the Benoni Harriers, the Pirates, the Rand Athletic Club and the Varsity Kudus.
Rugby and cricket: Ellis Park, located on South Park street, is the home of the Gauteng Lions, the highly-regarded Jo’burg rugby team. Ellis Park played host to the 1995 World Cup, and ranks as one of the most famous stadiums in the world.
In the world of cricket, Jo’burg’s leading team, the Highveld Strikers, make their home at Wanderers Stadium, located in Liiovo. The team is a successful one, typically representing the city in South Africa’s leading competitions.
Outdoor sport: excellent swimming facilities can be found in the suburb of Brixton and tennis courts are open to the public at the Marks Park complex in Emmarentia. You’ll also find opportunities for ballooning, face-first abseiling, mountaineering, bouldering and paragliding, if you’re so inclined.
