Major highways are well-maintained, and coach services are provided by a number of operators, with buses arriving from all over the country and from neighbouring countries as well.
By air: Durban International Airport is around 10 miles to the south of the city centre, and is serviced by flights from many originating points. Most incoming international flights land at either Johannesburg or Cape Town airports, with passengers making subsequent connections on to Durban. The journey by air from London to Durban typically takes 12 hours, 20 minutes.
By train: South African Railways, or Spoornet as it’s also known, provides train service to Durban from the nearby countries of Botswana, Mozambique and Zimbabwe, via Cape Town or Johannesburg depending on the point of origin. Long-distance passenger rail services are operated by Shosholoza Meyl from Johannesburg via Pietermaritzburg, on a daily schedule; and from Cape Town via Bloemfontein and Kimberley, once weekly.
By bus: most all bus operators in South Africa, such as Greyhound and Intercape, as well the Baz Bus, run regular services to Durban from neighbouring countries. A number of chartered bus operators offer service to Durban, including African Explorer Travel & Tours, Coachwise Tours & Charters and SanMor Coaches. Passengers are advised to check with local police regarding safety in travel to and from Mozambique, as the roads were closed for some time due the war, and conditions still vary.
