The V&A Waterfront is filled with pubs, bars and movie theatres and is recommended as a safe option for wandering around after dark: it’s well-patrolled by security personnel and also filled with people.
Heritage square, in the centre, boasts an eclectic mix of options; and for clubbing, the area bounded by Loop, Long, Orange and Wale streets is a good choice. You’ll find that clubs come and go frequently in Cape Town, so it’s a good idea to ask around to find out about the current hot spots.
In addition to the Long street venues, there are clubs at Green Point catering to a more sophisticated crowd. The Cape quarter is the hub of the city’s gay scene; and lower Main attracts a bohemian-type crowd.
