Richards Bay is a coastal port located on a 30-square-kilometre lagoon of the Mhlatuze River, making it one of the largest man-made harbours in South Africa. Originally conceived as a tourist destination, it has evolved into an important industrial centre and shipping port for the region. Despite the industry, the town is still an excellent destination for exploring the miles of pristine coastline that stretch all the way north to Mozambique. One of the town's greatest attributes is its summer-like climate that dominates all year round. Another important tourist attraction is the Richards Bay Game Reserve located along the northern side of the lagoon and home to a range of exotic animals like hippos, crocodiles and a wealth of birdlife.
