Strategically located for sightseeing, the budget friendly Protea Hotel Breakwater Lodge in Cape Town is situated in right in the famous Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, minutes from a wide range of tourist facilities, restaurants, shops, and boutiques as well as Two Oceans Aquarium and BMW Pavilion. There are two restaurants. A self service restaurant offering breakfast, lunch and dinner and snacks all day and a more formal restaurant which is long and narrow and has spectacular views of Table Mountain as well as the Waterfront. A la carte food can be ordered here and there is a good wine menu.

A small lobby with a reception desk to your right as you enter and a small seating area for guests. The reception is open 24 hours a day and has a safety deposit box.

Despite once being a prison this is a very attractive building and resembles a castle more than a prison. Painted white, two storeys tall and with a large central courtyard this is a pleasant looking hotel.
