Introduction to Port Edward - Beach
South Africa's KwaZulu-Natal and Eastern Cape provinces meet each other near the small beach resort of Port Edward. The lush tropical gardens which blossom along the beautiful coastline between Port Shepstone and this community, named after King Edward VII, have earned the region its 'Hibiscus Coast' nickname. The busiest time of year for Port Edward Beach hotels is between Christmas and New Year's Day, when Silver Beach's annual parties become the community's liveliest events. However, visitors can fish and swim on Silver Beach all year long. In 1831, Zulu warriors murdered the family and friends of a European settler named Henry Flynn over a stolen cattle dispute in the nearby sightseeing spot of Tragedy Hill. South Africa's longest super tube and the KwaZulu Natal Coast's oldest known shipwreck are also located here. The Portuguese San Joao vessel sank here in 1552. During the annual sardine run, the waters fill with millions of tiny silver fish who dodge much larger underwater predators during their journey from the Eastern Cape. other spellings: portedward bech otel, portedwade bech hotell, pot edwod beach hote, edwaed bech
