Introduction to Pilanesberg - Pilanesberg National Park

Pilanesberg in Northwest Province, South Africa, west of Pretoria, borders the Sun City entertainment complex. Originally owned by three local tribes, today the park is operated by the Northwest Parks and Tourism Board. Attractively hemming in the area are three concentric ridges or rings of hills. The park's main geological feature is the Pilanesberg Alkaline Ring Complex. Strewn throughout the park are sites dating to the Iron Age and Stone Age. Travelling is simply accomplished through most of the 572 square kilometres of parkland. Pilanesberg National Park hotels are a rich mix of everything from basic campsites to luxury lodges. Such facilities also have bars and gift shops for those not spending the night. In the middle of the park, there is a manmade lake created by Mankwe Dam, as well as the naturally constructed Thabayadiotso, which means 'Proud Mountain'.
