The small town of Paulpietersburg sits adjacent to Dumbe Mountain in South Africa's flatland region and caters mainly to visitors taking part in outdoor activities, particularly paragliding and hiking. It also serves as a stopping point for those taking the alternative 'Rainbow Route' to the coast from Mpumalanga and is set less than four hours away from Johannesburg. Paulpietersburg is part of the Battlefields Route, meaning it features a rich and turbulent past that played a significant part in both British and South African history. One of the biggest attractions here and the location of some Paulpietersburg hotels is Mkuze Game Reserve, which is a portion of the World Heritage certified Greater St Lucia Wetland Park. It has been protected for over a century and features a diverse range of wildlife spanning from fish eagles to cheetah to wildebeest. There's also Fort Clery, which is set several kilometres from town and was built in 1879. It was the German Lutheran missionaries' first settlement in South Africa and one can still visit KwaZulu Natal's oldest German school here.
