Introduction to Mthatha, South Africa
Set just over an hour from South Africa's Indian Ocean coastline, Mthatha is best known for being a hometown for many of the country's black leaders, including Nelson Mandela. Some of these individuals have recently retired here and the small city features three different museums dedicated to the life and accomplishments of Mandela. The main museum was opened in 2000 in observance of the 10th anniversary of Mandela's release from prison whilst the Birthplace Museum is located south of the city in Qunu. Mthatha is the heart of the Wild Coast and boasts a number of nearby attractions that speak to this name, including the Dwesa and Cwebe nature reserves. The two reserves are divided by Mbashe River, stretch all the way to the Indian Ocean and feature one of the largest indigenous coastal forests anywhere in South Africa. Travellers should note that for many years, this small city was called Umtata and it is sometimes still referred to by this name despite the city having officially changed its name in March of 2004. Mthatha hotels are readily available to accommodate visitors to this attractive part of the country.
