Set on Route 62 about 200kms from Cape Town, Montagu is a quaint village on the edge of the Karoo region that attracts visitors from far and wide seeking to taste the area's world-class wines or to explore mountain trails, or to set out on scenic nature walks. The town boasts spectacular views, well-kept European architecture and the highest number national monuments of any South African community. Among the most noteworthy of the area's many attractions is Anysberg Nature Reserve, which is said to have the Karoo's best scenery and which serves as a backdrop for dozens of fascinating species of plants and animals. Wine lovers can jump off the Breedekloof Wine Route for a jaunt on the Little Karoo Wine Route which offers a glimpse of the Montagu's uniquely arid grape-growing region. Just down the road from town is the Soekershof, which features a bizarre array of interesting things including the biggest hedge-maze on Earth, the Stone Age cinema and a cactus labyrinth. Montagu hotels are highly regarded as evidenced by the village being voted South Africa's 2002 Village of the Year.
