The city of Klerksdorp serves as an economic centrepiece for South Africa's North West province and is still a hub for mining in the region, particularly for gold and uranium. The surrounding area has also become well known for its grain production and herds of Sussex cattle, and it functions as South Africa's Sussex Cattle Breeders Association headquarters. There are a handful of Klerksdorp hotels and attractions for visitors here, including the Goudkoppie, a fascinating set of mining shafts originally constructed in the 18th century, as well as Pilanesberg National Park, which boasts large zebra populations living in one of the world's three alkaline volcanic craters. Numerous other nature reserves are set in the area including birdwatching favourites Faan Meintjies Nature Reserve and Wolwespruit Nature Reserve. In town, there's the Klerksdorp Museum, which features geological, historical and farming exhibits set within the town's old jail and several other buildings. Not far away is Orkney Golf Course, which features tree-shaded rolling fairways near the Vaal River. Several professionals such as Peter Charles and Simon Hobday began their golfing careers here.
