One of the larger towns on South Africa's N3 highway, stretching from Durban to Johannesburg, Harrismith is a handsome, well-kept community though it sees fewer tourists than other destinations in Free State Province. The town functions primarily as a transportation stopover and a commercial centre for wool producers from the surrounding area, though it also has a number of local and nearby attractions for visitors, including an 18-hole golf course which was designed more than a century ago and is thought to be South Africa's third-oldest course. There's also access to numerous outdoor activities at Golden Gate National Park, including climbing, hiking, wildlife viewing and mountain biking. The park boasts stunning golden sandstone cliffs set on the edge of the Maluti Mountains. Outdoor lovers will also enjoy the Sterkfontein Dam and Reservoir, where conditions are great for water sports amid this fantastic wildlife reserve. Harrismith proudly hosts both the Berg Marathon running event and the Dirty Harry mountain bike race every year, during which times Harrismith hotels can be hard to come by.
