Introduction to Durban - Berea
Berea is both a collective noun for the northern Durban suburbs and the name of a high ridge overlooking the South African city's centre and the Indian Ocean. Once an upscale colonial residential district, set between the university campus and the Burman Bush Nature Reserve, the Berea contains old colonial mansions, many of which have been converted to office buildings. Musgrave and Upper Glenwood are the two main districts, separated by the highway linking the area to the city centre. Berea hotels are a good base and quieter environment for those touring both Durban and its surrounding areas of natural beauty, with efficient transportation to the city centre with its high number of attractions and things to do. The city's Golden Mile of sun-drenched Indian Ocean beaches gives first-class surfing, wide sands for lazing and good swimming, in spite of a the very occasional shark attack! In the off-season, visitors can enjoy the wide strands with few other distractions, although during the Christmas holiday season it's packed-solid with families. Visit our Durban Travel Guide
