Introduction to Durban - Beach
The South African city of Durban lies on the coast in Kwa-Zulu Natal province and is famous for its extensive beaches drawing huge numbers of water sports enthusiasts every year. The wide, sandy beaches of Durban are known as the Golden Mile, stretching along the Indian Ocean shore from downtown and famous for great surfing. Back from the beaches are many Durban Beach hotels, crammed to bursting in summer and almost empty in the low season, when travellers have the vast stretches of beach almost to themselves. Durban itself is a lively city, with many festivals, nature reserves, parks, craft markets, malls, street markets, entertainments and a great choice of international cuisine. Visitors are advised to avoid the Point Road area at all times as well as the small streets behind the hotels and the business district after dark. The city's shopping mall, the harbour area and the major tourist hotel areas are quite safe.Visit our Durban Travel Guide
