Introduction to Prekmurje, Slovenia
With Hungary, Croatia and Austria on to its borders, Prekmurje is one of the most popular holiday areas in Slovenia. Hotels in Prekmurje are often Hungarian in style as the region was owned by Slovenia’s neighbour for many years. The culture in this region is different to anywhere else in Slovenia due to its Hungarian roots and the town of Murska Sobota is the most popular destination to visit. Accommodations are available in other big towns such as Lendava, Beltinci, Dobrovnik, Turnisce and Crensovci. The area is famous for its food and its traditional dishes include a millet, turnip and pork casserole known as bujta repa and some of the older and more traditional hotels offer this dish on its restaurant menus. It is separated from the rest of Slovenia by the Mur River and many choose to make use of the hotels in Prekmurje that can be found close to the river, and avid walkers and explorers often come here to hike around the countryside areas.
