Asian Civilisations Museum: located in a superbly restored 1910 neo-classic building, this is a treasure chest of Asian artefacts and culture, delving into Singapore’s Asian heritage. There is a particularly strong collection of Chinese historical and cultural pieces as well as literati and some good examples of Peranakan culture (a unique blend of Chinese, Malay and European influences).

Chinatown Heritage Centre: conveniently located near the centre, this worthwhile museum reveals the life of the ethnic Chinese in the early years of Singapore’s history, typified by over crowded shop houses and bustling streets full of traders.
48 Pagoda street. Open: Monday to Thursday; 09:00 to 20:00; Friday to Sunday, 09:00 to 21:00.
Malay Heritage Centre: once home to Malay royalty, the Istana is part of the seat of government and now houses the Malay Heritage Centre. It’s an excellent representation of one of Singapore’s most important ethnic groups and the displays show the early lives, exploits and tribulations of the Malay community on Singapore.
Istana Kampong Glam compound. Open: Mondays: 13:00 to 18:00; Tuesdays to Sundays: 10:00 to 18:00.
National Museum: tracing its origins to a suggestion from Sir Raffles himself, the National Museum is more than 150 years old and is housed in a historical building near Fort Canning. The contents aren’t as impressive as you would expect, but it does have some national treasures and Asian cultural artefacts.
Armenian Street. Open: Tuesday to Sunday, 09:00 to 17:30pm (21:00 on Wednesday).
Singapore History Museum: an interesting excursion into Singapore’s chequered past, exploring its rich heritage of the four cultures, including the struggle for nationhood and developments that have shaped its evolution.
Stamford road. Open: Saturday to Thursday, 09:00 to 18:00; Friday, 09:00 to 21:00.
