There are no major tropical diseases that are rife in Singapore, however dengue fever is considered dangerous as there is no effective prevention or treatment. It’s generally not fatal, but it leaves the immune system weakened to a subsequent attack, which significantly increases the risk of fatality.
Symptoms are very similar to malaria and the disease is borne by certain mosquitoes that are usually found in stagnant water. Most Singaporeans take great care to spray these areas; however, covering yourself in clothing is the best prevention. Reported cases are few.
Heat stroke is perhaps the greatest threat, as this country lies on the tropics and can be extremely humid year round. Be sure to carry sufficient water with you when sightseeing and take frequent breaks in the shade. Sunbathing between 11:00 and 15:00 can be dangerous.
Pharmacies are well stocked and widely found, with sufficient late-night dispensaries found in built up areas. Hospitals are professional and accept emergency patients without delay.
