By road: a short causeway bridge links the island with the Malay Peninsula and a highway crosses the Straits of Johor and runs directly to Kuala Lumpur, making the journey by road painless and taking about five hours. Buses also ply the route leaving every other hour in either direction from the Lavender street station in Singapore and the Puduraya station in KL. There are also shuttles to Johor, just over the border, from several points around the city. By causeway: the major border crossing is across the causeway, over the Straits of Johor, between Woodlands and Johor Bahru in Malaysia. There is also a second causeway between Singapore and Malaysia that links Tuas in Singapore with Geylang Patah. By ferry: depart from the well provided World Trade Centre (WTC) terminal near the train station, mainly to Palau Bintan, an offshore Indonesian island. Tanah Merah terminal, near the airport, serves the Malaysian mainland. These ferries are mainly used for daytrips. By rail: there is also a rail service into Malaysia, with several departures a day to KL, and one that goes as far as Butterworth on the border with Thailand, with an overnight connection to Bangkok, but it’s a long journey. Then there is the Asian Orient Express, which covers the same route to the Thai capital on alternate Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays, offering the ultimate in luxury, but at a price! | |
