Getting Around

Getting Around Singapore
Road: Singapore has an excellent highway system known as the Bukit Timah and Pan-Island Expressways, which runs east and west through the most populated areas, with several other routes that circumnavigate the island. However, an automatic toll is exacted (or a fine) using a sophisticated and efficient laser system which requires each car to carry a pre-paid card inside an onboard box. Rental cars will have this included.
Metro: the MRT consists of two lines and several dozen stations, with one service running east-west from Changi to Jurong and another that circles the island, starting near the train and ferry stations. Tickets can be bought individually at vending machines in the stations or as day tickets offering a dozen rides. Fares are very reasonable.
Taxi: taxis are ubiquitous but generally confined to set pick up points where people queue in an orderly fashion with vehicles arriving frequently. Fares are reasonable and the drivers are governed by a strict set of rules.
