Introduction to Mahe Island, Seychelles
If sand, sea, surf and fresh seafood are the recipe for a dream holiday, the Seychelles island of Mahe is the perfect destination. The largest island in the archipelago, Mahe offers the island country capital of Victoria and its coasts are lined with magnificent Indian Ocean beaches, warm blue seas and sheltering palms. Victoria is a tiny city and the Seychelles' only major port, virtually unchanged since the British colonial era. The island is a heaven for nature-lovers and eco-tourists, with a good number of indigenous species and a huge variety of birdlife. Car hire is the answer to personal transportation here, as the entire island can be circumnavigated in a few hours, picking out remote beaches and tiny villages. Accommodation on the island includes bed and breakfasts as well as Mahe Island hotels, many of which are resort style and located on beautiful, uncrowded beaches like Beau Vallon. A must-visit here is the offshore coral atoll of Aldabra, the largest in the world, enclosing a huge tidal lagoon that is home to the giant land tortoise. Windsurfing, diving, snorkelling, fishing and swimming as well as sailing are all popular here. Visit our Mahe Island Travel Guide
