In the Casamance region of southern Senegal lies the city of Ziguinchor, an important centre of trade and transport for this part of the country. Located on a wide river, the city is connected to Dakar on the Aline Sitoe Diatta ferry, which takes 16 hours and is about as adventurous as it comes. The city also has a small airport that runs daily flights to Dakar and onwards to Cap Skirring, a major coastal resort town. There isn't a great deal to do in this sleepy Senegalese town, but visitors who are passing through can check out the Marche Saint Maur des Fosses, the city's best local market. The Artisan Centre is also a good choice if you're looking for traditional handicrafts and souvenirs from the region. Ziguinchor hotels are fairly limited, with some accommodation standing out as reliably well-managed, clean and comfortable. A nice way to end the day is with a stroll down to the port to watch the boats coming in as the sun sets.
