Toubacouta is a village of around 3,000 people in the delta region along the eastern coast of Senegal. Sitting just across the river from The Gambia, it is often used as a stopover point for tours on their way to see the national parks in the area. In the village itself there is little in the way of traveller amenities, but this traditional village offers a rare look at the unique culture of this delta region of Senegal. There are some Toubacouta hotels near the village, though they seem to be connected exclusively to tour companies. A boat ride takes visitors to the pristine island of Sippo to enjoy the local palm wine and gin. The main reason for coming to this village is to get to Fathala, a lovely nature preserve that protects the indigenous flora and fauna of this delta environment of Senegal. Ferries run frequently to the larger town of Barra just up the river.
