Temperatures during the day seldom fall below freezing. Summer temperatures are basically moderate, rarely exceeding 23°C. Edinburgh's location between the inland hills and the coast subjects it to the prevailing winds coming from the south-west that are associated with the unstable, moist air from the Gulf Stream. The result is that conditions can be fairly windy, with frequent rainfall.
Sunny skies in Edinburgh can quickly change to clouds and drizzle during the summer. Although unpredictable, summer conditions are usually mild and fine: even days that begin with drizzle often turn sunny. Most of the rainfall occurs during the winter months, with December, January and February tending to be rather gloomy and damp. Snow does occasionally fall, but is unusual.
