Bus: buses are the main form of public transport in Edinburgh and the network covers the metropolitan area well. The services run quite smoothly as buses are permitted exclusive use of certain lanes on city streets. Fares are paid on board, and exact change is required. If you prefer, daily tickets can be purchased in advance, allowing unlimited travel on all buses operated by a particular company.
Taxi: taxis can be easily hailed on the street and at the numerous taxi ranks are located throughout the city. You’ll find that the rates tend to be quite high.
Bicycle: cycling around the city is a possibility, but it’s best to consider in advance if you really want to pedal up all those hills. If this doesn’t put you off, then you’ll find the city to be cycle-friendly, with many ‘greenway’ routes in place that are open to bicycles, buses and taxis only. In addition, the countryside offers splendid scenery and flatter roads, making cycling more enjoyable and comfortable.
