Day Trips and Excursions in Edinburgh
Rosslyn Chapel: is one of Britain’s most fascinating churches and has increased significantly in popularity since being featured in the best-selling book and Hollywood film, the DaVinci Code. The chapel has strong ties with the Knights Templar, a medieval religious order believed to have brought back many treasures from the Holy Land including the ‘Holy Grail.’
Claims have been made that many of the treasures are buried beneath Rosslyn Chapel. The chapel itself boasts an intricately-carved interior, featuring many ancient pagan symbols. From Edinburgh, it’s just a 45-minute drive, following the A701 to Penicuik.
Nearby, the lovely seaside town of North Berwick makes an interesting excursion and can be conveniently reached by train from Edinburgh.
South Queensferry: is a pretty suburb, north-west of the city, reached in about 10 minutes by train from Haymarket station. As you wander along the cobbled High Street, you’ll come across a number of pubs and restaurants and also the Queensferry Museum, which is a popular stop for visiting tourists.
St Andrews: is home to a well-known university, as well as the world’s most famous golf club: the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews. This town is often referred to as ‘the home of golf.’ The town, the golf course and the British Golf Museum are must-sees for enthusiasts of the sport. The museum features exhibits on the town’s 500 years of history in the sport; on the story of the British Open; and on the sport’s heritage and golf’s greatest legends.
