For golfers, Scotland is synonymous with the best in the world of golf, and there are a number of courses that are open to visitors. Other possibilities range from shopping to rock climbing, so you can be sure that you won’t be lacking for things to do here.
Football: as in most of the UK, football is a really popular spectator sport in Edinburgh. The two biggest clubs here are Heart of Midlothian, known locally as ‘Hearts,’ and Hibernian, known to the local as ‘Hibs.’ If you’re a football fan, you can check local listings for matches that may be scheduled during your visit.
Horse racing: another sporting event popular locally is horse racing, with five courses found in the Edinburgh area. The most conveniently-located race course is at Musselburgh, at Linkfield road, where meets are held almost every week during the summer.
Indoor rock climbing: is gaining popularity here, as it doesn’t depend at all on the unpredictable Scottish weather. There are several venues across the city where you can learn rock climbing, indoors, with lessons and equipment available for your year-round enjoyment.
West Bow and Grassmarket areas in the Old Town are the place to head for antiques lovers. There are plenty of interesting and lively markets to visit, such as the Edinburgh Farmers’ Market and the New Street Indoor Market. If you’re looking for souvenirs, shops along the Royal Mile offer up traditional Scottish good, and tartan in particular; however, you might find better prices at some of the shops on the side lanes.
