The city has a strong cultural tradition, particularly in literature, and is home to DC Thomson & Co, the producer of the Beano & Dandy comics. Dundee is also home to a thriving music scene and a number of museums, theatres and galleries.
McManus Gallery: housed in what is often termed Dundee’s most impressive building, a gothic revival-style, structure, this gallery and museum is the most significant in the city, although refurbishments mean it won’t reopen until the spring 2008. The main collection features celebrated Scottish art from the area and much more besides.
Verdant Work: a museum featuring a remodelled jute factory, previously one of the primary industries in Dundee for which the city became well known – hence the saying that Dundee is famous for ‘jute, jam and journalism’. Verdant Works includes interactive displays and has won numerous awards.
Broughty Castle: just to the east of town on the Tay river estuary, this 500-year-old castle makes a fantastic day out with spectacular views out over the bay and the North Sea. Visitors here can also take boat trips off the coast to spot marine animals including dolphins and whales, so it pays to get here on a clear, sunny day.
