Introduction to Wick, Scotland
The community of Wick is one of the northernmost municipalities in mainland Scotland, and the river and bay which surround it are both also called Wick, an old Norse word which means 'bay'. The town has been settled since before the era when it was ruled by the Norse, over 1,000 years ago, after which time it became Europe's largest port for herring during the late 19th century. Today, it is often compared to a smaller version of Aberdeen because of the many Victorian buildings along its streets, some of which have been converted into stately Wick hotels. The small size of the town means that most attractions can be accessed on foot from one another. Top sights include: the ruins of the 12th century castle; the Heritage Museum, which depicts the community's herring boom; and the world's shortest street, which is just over two metres long, spanning the length of the Ebenezer Place building.other spellings: wickhotels, wic otel, weck hotell, wick hote, wick hotes, wick hotle
