Introduction to Peterhead, Scotland
The largest settlement in the part of northeastern Scotland known as Aberdeenshire is Peterhead, which is also the easternmost community in all of mainland Scotland. This seaside town was first established in 1593 some 48kms north of Aberdeen on the coast of the North Sea and was a prominent fishing community for hundreds of years. Today, Peterhead may be best known as the home of one of the toughest prisons in Scotland, but fortunately, the atmosphere of all hotels in Peterhead is much more reminiscent of the community's days as one of Scotland's most fashionable resort and spa retreats at the end of the 18th century. The impressive historic buildings in town share a lovely red brick construction that gives the town its trademark style. Peterhead's main attractions include Lido Beach, the Arbuthnot Museum, and the world's 18th oldest golf course. Visitors will find plenty of restaurants, bars and shops to keep them occupied during their stay.
