Introduction to North Uist, Scotland
The island of North Uist, in Scotland's Outer Hebrides, spans over 100 square miles, making it the 10th largest of the Scottish islands. Lochmaddy, on the east coast, is the island's main community. Here, visitors will find North Uist hotels alongside a museum, a fishing harbour, a camera obscura and an arts centre. Amenities such as shops and eateries are thin on the ground - not surprising given it is the outdoor beauty that people primarily come here for. Other settlements on the loch-dotted island include Sollas, Tigharry, Hosta, Cladach Kirkibost, Grimsay and Scolpaig, with the latter home to a historic 19th century tower. Also of historical interest are the prehistoric structures of Barpa Langass, Fir Bhreige and Pobull Fhinn. Birders will have a field day at Balranald nature reserve, where species from arctic terns through to shearwaters can be seen. Causeways connect the island with Benbecula, Baleshare and Berneray, while ferries ply the route between Lochmaddy and Uig on Skye to the east, and other neighbouring islands. other spellings: north uisthotels, north uist otel, north uist hotell, north uist hote, north uist hotle
