Introduction to Kilwinning, Scotland
Kilwinning, affectionately known by locals as Kilwinkie, is a North Ayrshire town of 16,000. This historic community sits on the banks of the Garnock River, close to Irvine and Stevenston. The well-preserved old town centre is the main draw of a visit here, but equally worthy of exploration is the now ruined turn of the 19th century Eglinton Castle on the southern outskirts of the town. Spanning the river is a Kilwinning landmark, Abbot Adam's Bridge. This medieval bridge is largely in its original state. Also in town is a ruined 12th century Benedictine abbey which was largely destroyed in the 16th century. The rebuilt tower, once used as a prison, today serves as a museum. Kilwinkie can be accessed by rail or road from nearby Glasgow with ease. In fact, Kilwinning hotels are often used by travellers as bases for accessing Prestwick International Airport, just over 12 miles to the south and directly connected to the town by rail. other spellings: kilwinninghotels, kilwining otel, kelwinning hotell, kilwinning hote, kilwinneng hotes
