Introduction to Gourock, Scotland
Gourock in Scotland's west central Lowlands was once a popular seaside resort, but today it is primarily a residential town and ferry port. From the port, ferries run across the Clyde to Dunoon and Argyll. In the summer, visitors can enjoy a splash around in one of Scotland's last remaining outdoor swimming pools. This Gourock landmark, fed by seawater, dates to the turn of the 20th century. Another local landmark, colloquially known as the Granny Kempock Stone, is a megalithic stone overlooking Kempock Street, after which it takes its official name. At one time, sailors regularly circled the stone seven times to ensure a safe voyage. Near to the stone are two further monuments, John's Church and Castle Mansions. Most Gourock hotels are found on or near Kempock Street, with its quaint, traditional shops. Parks, sports clubs and a golf course round out the attractions. The town can be reached via the A8 or the A78, or by rail from Glasgow. other spellings: gourockhotels, otelin gourok, hotellin courock, kourock hote, gorock hotle
