Introduction to Glasgow, Scotland
Scotland's biggest city is home to more than two million people, once the surrounding conurbation is included. Glasgow boasts a big heart with plenty of energy. It has variously been named a city of culture, architecture, design and sport, and was named by UNESCO as a City of Music. The great parks, excellent access to the Scottish Highlands, fine museums, huge range of music and arts, and superb shopping continue to attract ever large numbers of tourists to Glasgow hotels. Fans of architecture, especially the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, will not want to miss the Willow Tearooms in nearby Sauchiehall. About 15 minutes to the east, Glasgow Cathedral is a Gothic masterpiece. The vibrant streets support an incredible live-music scene that can be enjoyed at venues throughout the city centre. For something a little more formal, head to the Clyde Auditorium, which sits next to the Scottish Exhibition & Conference Centre on the riverside. The Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, home to one of Europe's top symphony orchestras, is on Sauchiehall Street. Shoppers will want to start off in the market stalls of the Barras.
