Introduction to Eyemouth, Scotland
Eyemouth lies in Scotland's Berwickshire, between soaring cliffs, sandy beaches and charming harbours at the Eye Water's mouth. This Scottish Borders town is connected to Berwick-upon-Tweed, eight miles to the north, by the A1. Primarily a working fishing port, Eyemouth is perhaps best known among visitors for its fishing heritage. This is best experienced at the yearly Herring Queen Festival, but there is plenty of tradition to lap up at other times of year via the town's buildings. Gunsgreen House is a must-see, as is an intriguing cemetery watch house, constructed to protect against the body snatchers known as Resurrectionists. Wandering through the narrow lanes that lead up from the harbour and shipyard, it is easy to feel transported back to the days when smuggling was a regular occurrence here. Don't miss Isambard Kingdom Brunel's Bertha, docked at the harbour's World of Boats exhibition. Just out of town are seemingly endless opportunities to get wet or hike. In fact, many guests at Eyemouth hotels come just for the outdoor activities.
