Introduction to Edinburgh, Scotland
The Scottish capital is truly one of the world's great cities, with UNESCO recognition for many aspects of this flourishing and culturally-vibrant city, and an incredible range of arts and culture events to enjoy. Edinburgh hotels can get very busy, so tourists are advised to check the local events calendar and book well in advance. Both the new and old towns are recognised as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Edinburgh is also designated an UNESCO City of Literature. The Old Town contains most of the city's key attractions and can offer rewarding walks, as long as the weather holds. Here, visitors can enjoy Edinburgh Castle, St Giles Cathedral, the Palace of Holyroodhouse and the Museum of Scotland. The Camera Obscura on Castle Hill and the vantage points at North Bridge offer spectacular views of much of the city. Golfers are in for a big treat here, as the city boasts an incredible number of golf courses, many of which ring the city's periphery but several of which are only a few minutes from the centre. Shopping is plentiful, with Victoria Street a good place to start the retail fun. Visit our Edinburgh Travel Guide
