Introduction to Edinburgh - City Centre
Home to incredible history, fabulous buildings and a vibrant, modern community, the Scottish city of Edinburgh is going from strength to strength. Its arts and culture scene continues to strengthen, turning this northern capital into more than just an alternative to London. The city’s Old Town and New Town are both recognised by UNESCO as World Heritage sites. Much of the city’s medieval heritage is found in the Old Town, which is easily reached from hotels in Edinburgh city centre. This is where many of the best-known attractions are found. The impressive ‘underground’ 17th century experience of Real Mary King’s Close is found on High Street. A strong sense of history can also be felt among the centuries-old monuments in the Old Calton Burial Ground to the north. The Gothic greatness of the Scott Monument, just west of the burial ground, marks the importance of poet Sir Walter Scott and offers fine views of the city. The nearby Princes Street Gardens offer wonderful walks as well as great views of important buildings such as the city’s castle. Visit our Edinburgh Travel Guide
