Introduction to Aberdeen - City Centre
Though it’s often overlooked by both the British media and many tourist itineraries, the Scottish city of Aberdeen has plenty to entertain visitors seeking something different from the UK’s bigger, better-known destinations. The city’s attractive location, sandwiched between the North Sea and vast swathes of rugged countryside, makes it a great base from which to explore dramatic landscapes. The city’s heavy involvement in the oil business means its economy enjoys a vibrancy that is unusual for a city its size. From hotels in Aberdeen city centre, visiting the local attractions is a doddle. The city’s Maritime Museum, which sits on the harbour, not far from the ferry port, offers a great trip through the city’s seagoing heritage. The Aberdeen Market, just north of the museum, the Trinity Shopping Centre and the much larger Union Square Centre provide plenty of convenient shopping options. The local railway station is found here, at Union Square. The Marischal Museum, a few minutes’ walk north on Broad Street, contains exhibits on Scottish archaeology as well as antiquities and other exhibits from around the world. The city’s art gallery, situated across from the Academy Shopping Centre, is a short walk north. Less than a kilometre to the east lies a beautiful sand beach that stretches for more than three kilometres. Visit our Aberdeen Travel Guide
