Go running: jogging in 40°C heat might not be everyone’s idea of fun but the local expatriates in Riyadh are regular Hashers, meaning they operate regular running clubs that pass through destinations in the city. In the absence of more decadent Western pastimes, running is all the rage. There are three such clubs operating here but you need to be invited, so ask around.
Have a coffee: although Riyadh does in places look like an American fast-food theme park, you don’t necessarily have to visit one of the rapidly multiplying Starbuck’s chains here to get your caffeine fix. Riyadh is a haven for traditional Arabic-style coffee, the kind made traditionally by the Bedouins, and you can get one too. It’s aromatic and thick and makes a pleasurable alternative to a beer, which of course is banned.
Shopping: with its ever-growing number of American-style malls to choose from, Riyadh is one of the choice destinations for keen shoppers looking to spend big in the Middle East and there are even areas where women are encouraged, and even ordered, to lose the traditional Islamic dress in favour of jeans and make-up. It may not be cheap but it’s certainly fun.
