Castle of Cultural Arts Museum: something slightly different, this museum focuses on the musical development of Saudi Arabia while also briefly going over the country’s general history.
Although opened by the Ministry of Culture and Information, the concept was created by Tarik Abdul Hakeem, a Saudi musician. Now close to its 30th year of operation, this museum is a breath of fresh air in a country that strictly monitors musical tastes.
Central Jeddah. Open: 09:00 to 13:00, Sat to Thu.
Nassif House: the former home of the Nassif family, a wealthy Arabian clan that traded extensively in the region, this building is now a government-run museum featuring numerous cultural artefacts. The building itself alone is worth a visit: it was built in the 1870s and until the 1970s it was the tallest in the city at seven storeys. This is a fantastic example of old Jeddah that should not be missed.
King Abdul historical square. Open: 09:00 to 13:00, Sat to Thu.
National Museum: formerly King Abdul Aziz Palace, this exhibition is now a thorough overview of the history of the Arabian Peninsula going back 7,000 years. Many of the artefacts here are very old including grave stones dating back nearly a 1,000 years and coins that were traded in the region. The Islamic Age is particularly well covered.
Near Khozam Palace, South Jeddah. Open: 09:00 to 12:00, Sat to Thu.
