Of Middle Eastern food is too exotic for your taste buds then fear not because Ronald McDonald and crew have made it all the way from America to be in Jeddah in large numbers. McDonald’s, KFC and the rest of the fast-food giants are slowly taking over Saudi Arabia’s second city and there is no shortage of copycat local restaurants around too.
When you want to go for something a little more flamboyant than a Big Mac, head to one of the plush hotels like the Qasr Al Sharq. This seven-star monster will no doubt be the finest building you have ever entered and it offers two first-class restaurants: Bice, an Italian restaurant, and Mat'am Al-Sharq, serving Middle Eastern dishes in an Arabian atmosphere.
Local cuisine
Tasty roadside joints serve up popular dishes like shwarma all over the city, a snack or full meal that is very much like a kebab including thinly sliced meat, usually mutton or chicken, stuffed inside a flat bread and served with garnish and salad.
Jeddah does a good range of Middle Eastern food so getting of dishes like falafel, mezi and humus is straightforward; while Indian cuisine is also hugely popular due to the large numbers of people that have migrated to Jeddah for employment. Biryani and vegetable curries abound.
