The airport consists of a Hajj Terminal, which is widely considered the fourth-largest in the world, along with a South Terminal used exclusively by Saudi Arabian Airlines and a North Terminal which receives international flights on all other carriers.
Plans are underway to drastically extend the capacity of the airport so that it would be able to handle up to 80 million passengers within the next decade. Currently the airport is getting near to full capacity. This hugely ambitious project will see construction work surround the current airport for the foreseeable future.
The North Terminal receives flights from a host of destinations including Moscow and Kabul with major airlines like Lufthansa and Air France flying here.
Shoppers for duty-free alcohol will of course be disappointed here as none is for sale but there are other shops selling perfume, clothes and other souvenirs. The airport unsurprisingly contains an extensive prayer room along with other facilities such as ATMs, currency exchange kiosks and places to buy food.
There are numerous international car hire firms with premises in arrivals including Avis; if you are a woman you will not be allowed to drive, however, according to Saudi law.
